Louanne Kaupa, RDN, LN, CDE
Louanne is self-employed, doing business as Eat Well Nutrition Therapy, which was established in 2005. She provides individual, family and group medical nutrition therapy and/or education and specializes in the treatment of eating disorders and diabetes education. About her career, Louanne says, “What’s not to like about helping people improve their health and feel better about themselves?”
Louanne also describes challenges in this era of concentration on appropriately documenting in the electronic health record: “I feel that all too often medical nutrition therapy is NOT on the minds of health care providers (thus nutrition intervention for care is pushed down the list or is there even a box to check for nutrition intervention)? We as nutrition professionals must promote our profession to the public AND to health care providers/decision makers – they should be our referral source (and a referral is often required by some payers for RDN services).”
When asked how MAND membership has benefited her, Louanne says, “I have met many incredible people with intelligence, passion and commitment to the profession and to the care of all people. Being a part of MAND provides for a plethora of networking opportunities.”
Her advice for early careerists: “Do not shy away from participation in state/local committees – ‘hold a seat at the table’ where decisions are being made about accessing and/or improving health care. Dialogue with members of the health care team (physicians, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, pharmacists).” If you want to hear more from Louanne, she will be speaking at the MAND Annual Meeting on reimbursement issues, along with Donna Gjesvold.
